BLOG - Overproduction in the clothing industry

Did you know that overproduction in the clothing industry is a major problem that not only leads to waste but also harms the environment? It is shocking to know that clothing companies destroy more than 140 million kilograms of clothing annually in the Netherlands alone!
How does this actually happen? It is partly due to the fast fashion business model, where new collections are quickly brought to market to continuously entice consumers to buy new clothing. But the inventory management of clothing companies also plays a role. Often, they produce more clothing than necessary to keep their production process running, resulting in huge stocks that remain unsold.
Fortunately, there are solutions to tackle this problem. Clothing companies can, for example, work with just-in-time production and pay more attention to inventory management to prevent surpluses. More sustainable materials and production methods can also help reduce the impact on the environment.
But as a consumer, you can also contribute to a more sustainable fashion industry. For example, choose second-hand clothing or more sustainable and ethically produced clothing when making your purchases.
Fortunately, there are also initiatives in the Netherlands that fight against overproduction, such as the motion from the House of Representatives to ban the destruction of unsold clothing. There are also various organizations that are committed to a more sustainable and fair fashion industry.
Let's become aware of the problem of overproduction in the clothing industry and take steps to reduce it. In this way, we can contribute to a more sustainable and fair future for the fashion industry.
