BLOG - The true cost of cheap clothing

BLOG - De ware kostprijs van goedkope kleding
On April 24, 2013, an eight-story building called Rana Plaza in Savar, Bangladesh, collapsed. This building was filled with clothing factories where more than 5000 workers were employed. Unfortunately, more than 1100 workers lost their lives in this tragedy.

This tragic event shocked the world and highlighted the consequences of the fast fashion industry. This industry is focused on making cheap clothing that is produced and consumed quickly. But what is the real cost of cheap clothing?

Many clothing factories in Bangladesh pay their workers only a fraction of the minimum wage and provide unsafe working conditions. Workers often work more than 12 hours a day, 7 days a week, and have no access to safety measures such as fire extinguishers and evacuation plans. Rana Plaza was unfortunately an extreme example of the dangers of these conditions.

After the collapse of Rana Plaza, global attention was drawn to the conditions of workers in the clothing industry. Various initiatives have been established to improve these conditions, such as certification programs and ethical fashion companies.

As consumers, we can also play a role in supporting ethical and sustainable fashion. By choosing clothing that is produced under safe and fair conditions, we can contribute to a change in the industry.

So the next time you buy a cheap piece of clothing, think about what the real cost is. Is it worth paying for someone else's health and well-being? Let's work together to make the clothing industry safer and fairer for everyone.
